Fan Kit 300RR

Postby bikesparky » Wed Jun 15, 2016 6:03 pm

What's the view on the fan kit for the 300RR?
It's always warm to hot here even in winter, daytime between 20 to 35C depending on the season.
I do like to have a fan as some of the riding is slow and technical.
Did a typical ride the other week on the Husky FE501 and for a big part the fan was on as it was mostly 1-st -2nd gear work in humid and hot rainforest.
A bit worried about the new 300RR not having a fan as I don't like to boil engines over.
The dealer told me they run pretty cool as is and it's probably not needed.

I do a lot of track marking and de arrowing that lead to engines getting pretty hot
I fitted a fan kit from new and it works a treat
Highly recommended :D :D

I run a fan on all 3 of my Betas. It is running every time I ride. I will always have a fan on my bike if I can.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Good to hear from people who ride in similar temperatures.
The fan kit was on top of my list till the dealer told me no need for it, I'll fit one anyway.

I don't know if you need a fan. I've had mine in all kinds of technical situations in summer for three years now. Never a drop of coolant lost or any indication of hot running even with good clean jetting. All I run is Engine Ice and I ditched the thermostat. Its not a 4stroke and not a KTM steamer 2stroke either. Engine Ice is no big deal really, before I installed a fan I'd run Evans. I ran Evans in 4strokes with perfect results, including a Cannondale that had a tiny radiator. This 2stroke will get no where near that hot.

How/why do you bypass the thermostat?

I made my own manifold to use the stock hoses but since swapped in a hose kit that moves the 'T" outside the frame triangle space for even more room and less connections. I removed mine because it was rubbing and wearing the housing on the frame and wiring from vibration, and to clean up that cluster #$%^ of an area. I never had a temp problem with or without it but you certainly don't need it if its not real cold and you warm the bike up properly. 200 hr top end looked and measured great so no worries.

Excellent. Thanks for the response. I'm still learning on these 2 strokes.

A guy at Beta USA told me to stay away from Evans coolant and I agreed with him because it raises the boiling point to high and your engine could be running way to hot and causing damage and you can't tell it's getting to hot because it's not spitting out any water. If you are spitting out coolant then you should install a fan. a two stroke does not need to run as hot as a four stroke. it can cause cylinder damage a lot sooner than a four-stroke.

Regarding the T stat bypass: I fitted the silicone hose kit that does this to my 300. I find on initial start up it has warmth in the radiator as quickly as it ever did. If you ride where it's snowing or similar conditions maybe you need it.

I'd love to see what temperature it opens at, I reckon it'd be pretty low.
