I'm lucky enough to have two nearly identical Beta's - 300RR RE and 390RR RE. I run golden's on both. I love them. I've tried a LOT of different tires over the years so far these are my tops. I run the 216AA 80/100 and 333 120/100 on the 300 and 216AA Fatty and 333 120/100 on the 390. It's interesting to compare the two different front tires, I like them both - but they have their strengths and weaknesses. When its sandy the fatty is great. Also, lots of rocks and roots and fatty shines. In deeper mud and ruts, I like the std better. Love the rear tires. Just raced an insanely slippery hare scramble last weekend, and I was passing a lot of folks that couldn't get traction. Brrraaaaaap. I went right by!

I ran this combo of Goldentyres, the 2 fronts and a 333 rear.

The Michelin Starcross 5 medium set I have on now is better for me and where I ride.

The front particularly is worlds better than either of the 2 GT216AA tyres I used.

the 333 is a terrific tyre though.

Rode my new '17 300 Race over the weekend for the first time. Read and heard enough about the stock tires they only rolled from the shop to the trailer and then into my garage for a swap. I bought an expensive bike then put cheap tires on it: Shinko 505 Cheater 110/100 rear, Shinko 546 90/100 front. We ride a perfect mix of gnarly committing rock step-ups and faces straight into high speed sandy washes and back again. This tire combo was EXCELLENT yesterday. Highly recommended the pair for the price of one Golden fatty (in the US anyway) - my GasGas and my other Beta both have Golden fattys. I'll try to circle back around and report on the longevity of the Shinkos. Cheers

I've been running that combo but in the 120 rear, which is a huge tyre. It is the best tyre I have used so far for the local mostly dry conditions.
In the bit of mud we get from time to time it does reasonably well but I'm sure there is better in real clay- mud.
As for grip this is the only tyre so far I can stop and start on a steep rocky incline here without problems.
What I also like is that the price is cheap and it last well for a soft tyre.
A issue I have with the otherwise good Golden Tyres is that they are made in China but it doesn't reflect on the price.

good thing they make so many different tires for us ride on, right! I had those exact tires on my 300RR RE last season. I thought they wore ok, (I got lots of chunking on the rear, and I started tearing all the side lugs off the front tire way before they got worn down height wise - front and rear were basically tattered at the same time). The thing I didn't care for though was they seemed too hard/stiff in the sidewalls. I got a ton of front end deflection with Starcross Medium if there were any rocks mid corner. overall, good traction though.

Yeah the blurb on these Michelins says lighter construction run higher pressure, I found that not to be the case. I guy told me he's had the same on a 480 and a 110 on the rear at that and he said he's sick of looking at them they've lasted so well!

I read and absorb what is said about a product but always look for info on how they will go where I ride, and how I ride which as we all have to realize, is different.

I used to run Michelin S12's, lots of guys said they were okay but would chunk, I never had that problem.

Joemaico,

Sounds like we ride in similar conditions. How are the Starr x Michelins holding up? My OE Michelins lasted less than 1 season.

Just hooked up on a GT216AA 90/90-21 ($100) and a GT333 120/100-18 ($120). The shop had the Pirelli MT16s there, but I've heard nothing but great things about them and figured they were a slam dunk so wanted to try the GTs first. I was hoping to see the IRC VE33 and VE35F combo there. Read a lot of good reviews about those as well. The GT333 looks huge but fits sweet. Stiff and thick side carcass with a more plyable center carcass for flattening out to grip.

So far so good. No chunking. But, they are wearing. But, they provide excellent grip in all conditions. So, I may have to replace more frequently - but worth it from my perspective.

Ran the bike today with new GT216AA 90/90 and GT333 120/100 with 10psi in both, normal tubes, dusty/sandy over hard pack. Loved it. It felt like I could have driven the bike blind. The front end felt like it was turning itself. Will have to try the fatty GT216AA next.
