Need a replacement skidplate - 300RR

Postby Hawkeye » Mon Sep 16, 2013 1:55 pm

Well, the stock skidplate is fine for Iowa logs and such, but not up to a good rock run as found in the UP of Michigan. Two significant cracks in my stocker, so like Scotty often said to Captain Kirk (who's also from Iowa), "She can't take many more more hits Captain!" I'm looking for a replacement skidplate, and I'd prefer plastic over aluminum. Looking at the Hyde pretty seriously, any suggestions or recommendations?

I'd say Hyde if you're after a poly-plate, seeing as Jay at Hyde is the newest member of the Beta fraternity.

There may also be an AXP available in Europe, and those have worked well on the Gassers.

Hyde combo EXG guards are available now. I've used them since '07 on the GGs and they have been great protection for the pipe as well. I have the AmBeta alloy plate made by Riccochete Racing which is sturdy, but just a Moose alloy guard on the pipe. I may change to a Hyde Combo for the added pipe protection alone. My '07 GG sold with the original pope which is incredible considering where I rode it. Jay should have some pics soon.

GMP, with all due respect, the Hyde combo is utter crap, I had it on my 07 cr250, nice dent where the main grommet meets the header. Didn't do much appart from stop any stones kicked up from front wheel.

I've got the CF guard on my Beta now but pipe still bends, going to get that fixed and put on a cage. I know, maybe I should learn to ride better but I have this uncontrollable pull towards mother earth.

Nothing is perfect, and yes the Hyde has its flaws but its still better than a separate pipe guard. It slides rather than sticks, and anything tied back to the frame/skidplate to transfer force is better. The frame mounted cages are the ultimate but unheard of here in the mainland USA. More common with you guys and riders in Hawaii where its really gnarly.

One thing that I do not like about the Beta motor is the spigot design. Female, cast as part of the cyl. I hope its stronger than a KTM. The GG and new Sherco steel male flange is a much more durable option tolerant of hits and tweaked pipes.

I see that Meca has a beautiful plate on their website but I don't know how to get one in the US. Anyone know of a source?

To be fair Hyde doesn't make an EXG guard for the 07' CR250, only the 2009' 250/300 and that's it for 2t Huskys, if you buy the wrong part for your bike there's a fair chance it won't work properly.

My Hyde was on a 2011 GasGas, it fit, and worked quite well. Took a beating and it's rather large size dispersed enough energy to keep the parts behind it straight. It was a mud magnet and rather difficult to reinstall, but it worked great.
